Safety
Omnilert is a service allowing mass notification by sending time-sensitive information to large groups of people. One can register with the service and receive text, email and/or voice messages during emergency situations. UMCES subscribes to Omnilert. Each student or employee must register to be included in the system. It is UMCES policy that all personnel, including students, must register. CBL is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for faculty, staff, students, visitors, and volunteers in all CBL buildings and laboratories. This commitment includes:
Mandatory health and safety training;
Observing and following health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (MOSH, OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, NRC, MDE, AND DOT);
Promptly reporting all safety and health hazards or violations and on-site incidents, injuries, and environmental illnesses; and
Giving due consideration to personal safety and the safety of others while performing assigned tasks and research.

Each of us should consider safety and environmental stewardship a personal responsibility and take appropriate measures to protect people and the environment. It is important to remember that individual laboratory safety procedures are the responsibility of the PI. Procedures are to be clearly posted and readily available in each laboratory near the entrance. Additionally, emergency contact information is to be posted on each laboratory door (or near the entrance) identifying how to contact the lab staff in the event of an emergency, leak, equipment failure, etc.
The Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant tests its emergency sirens at noon on the first Monday of every month. The CCNPP emergency evacuation plan is provided to all residents, and can be accessed here.
CBL has a written Safety Program that can be found on the shared “P” drive (safety folder) and below you will find links to campus specific policies and procedures
